Backpacking through Asia!

After 10 years of travelling in Winnie we needed a change. There are numerous places in the world where you can go in the winter months including Asia. We had already been there in 1997 but there were a number of countries we hadn't been to. We didn't have much time for planning the trip and only had a basic idea of which countries we wanted to go to. The rest of the planning was done as we travelled.

We put Winnie in storage in Vancouver and went backpacking for 8 months. We went to Dubai, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Tibet, China and in the summer of 2014 we were in Germany and England to visit family and friends and to watch the football World Cup.

Although we are world travellers we still have places we want to see and dreams to fulfil. Helen always wanted to trek to Everest Base Camp. The big question was - could Kirsten make it? Yes, no problem! A truly special experience that we will never forget.

Another highlight was taking the highest train in the world from the high Tibetan plateau to Xi'an where a visit to see the Terracotta Army is a must. The accommodation in Dubai was a luxury as was our tour in Myanmar.

We have mixed feelings about India where you can see things that you can't see anywhere else in the world. It's a huge country of extremes - the noise, the filth, the utter chaos, the amount of people. But it also has more World Heritage Sites than the rest of the world put together. Truly amazing and then there's also all the different religions and traditions. It's relatively cheap to travel around and the food can be very hot and mostly vegetarian. Not a problem until you get to Delhi and, despite taking every precaution, pick up a hefty E-Coli infection!!
