On Monday, Helen had to act as chauffeur, going with the "wilderness" group up to their boats and driving one of
their cars back. The problem was that she couldn´t find the lever to adjust the drivers seat! Everything on the
dashboard was digital, even cars are run by computers these days! So new settings had to be entered in. Of course,
Helen didn´t know how! So she had to drive back feeling like she was so far away from the steering wheel and pedals
that she was virtually a back seat driver! She probably could´ve put the car on auto pilot and let it drive back by
itself - if only she knew how! Fortunately, the car was brought back in one piece with no extra dents and scratches!
We had a number of children among the guests this week and one of the nights they wanted ice cream at 9pm! So we
opened up an ice cream bar for them.
At shore lunch on Tuesday, we saw some large black insects but it turned out that they were dragonfly larvae and
the black insect-like shells are left behind after the dragonflies have hatched!
On Wednesday, Helen had a bad case of dropsy. First, she literally threw a piece of strawberry shortcake on a plate
out of the fridge, as she tripped getting out. The cake landed the right way up on the plate but made a hell of a
crash! Somehow, the plate remained intact! Then she dropped 15 (yes - fifteen!) salad bowls getting them out of the
cupboard! Still nothing broken! Finally, she dropped a large aluminium bowl. What a crash! It sounded like a large
pair of cymbals! It certainly gave everyone a fright in the kitchen! Some guests wanted wine that evening, but Helen
was not allowed to fetch wine glasses for them!
On Thursday, it started raining just after the guests had gone out fishing and so they all came back in early for
coffee. There was quite a thunderstorm outside, so no one would be catching fish today so we made sandwiches for
lunch. Kirsten cleaned the griddle, whilst we got the chance as it wasn´t in use but it was hard work with a scraper.
Helen made a potato gratin for the evening meal, which took ages for so many people. In the afternoon, the
"wilderness" group returned. Helen used the quad bike to fetch their luggage for them but they were not a happy bunch!
They summarized their trip as "wet and buggy". Poor guys!
On Friday, Kirsten and Jess went out to shore lunch and had problems with the boat as the stopper came out and water
started to flood in! Then they missed the ramp! Then they had a real job starting a fire as the wood was all wet!
On Saturday, Jess and Helen were doing changeovers on cabins when the guests arrived really early. So they had to get
finished pronto!
On Sunday, Jess was told that she wouldn´t be needed for the next 2 weeks and that she would be on the bus the next day.
That evening, we chatted to Jess till late and got a shock when she showed us Lisa´s room in the cabin! It looked like
there had been burglars - drawers open, clothes and rubbish strewn all over the floor! But apparently that's the way it
always is!
